🎮 OpenTendo (Modern NES Recreation)

Status: In Progress
Type: Custom Console Hardware Build
Base Design: OpenTendo OSHW (by Redherring32)
Build by: Eric Flesher

🔧 Overview

The OpenTendo project is a modern hardware recreation of the iconic 1985 front-loading Nintendo Entertainment System. Based on open-source hardware (OSHW) schematics created by a developer known as Redherring32, this project revives the original NES motherboard with a modern DIY twist — while leaving room for serious upgrades.

🔩 The Build

Rather than fabricate the board myself, I purchased a pre-made OpenTendo PCB on eBay. The board came with a full kit of components — resistors, capacitors, connectors — and most of the required microchips already included. However, the CPU and RAM chips are proprietary to Nintendo and must be salvaged from a real NES.

🧠 Upgrade Plans

A working NES is great — but I don’t just want a functional throwback. I want a modernized, enhanced NES that preserves the soul of the original while embracing today’s tech. That means:

These upgrades are in the planning stage — nothing purchased yet — but they’re part of the long-term roadmap for this build.

💬 Notes from Eric

I’ve always loved retro consoles, and this project brings together two of my biggest passions: classic gaming and modern electronics. OpenTendo isn’t just about nostalgia — it’s about building something better from the ground up, learning along the way, and giving the NES the treatment it deserves.

More updates coming soon as I begin assembly and explore upgrade options.
